I Wasn’t Expecting to Fall So Hard
Sometimes the best reads come from the most unexpected places. I found this gorgeous hardcover at my library bookstore for $2, and what started as a killer deal turned into me thinking about this book non-stop.
The Find:
Veronica Roth, beautiful dust cover, intricate map art... I had to have it.
The Reading Experience:
The Reading Experience:
Roth’s writing is beautifully detailed. Yes, some reviews say it slows the pace, but I loved it—I WANT to be immersed in the world. The genre sits somewhere between sci-fi and fantasy, and the perspective shift from third to first person and so on (starting chapter seven) was unexpected but welcome.
The Characters:
The Characters:
Cyra—a woman who is strong AND soft. Powerful yet vulnerable. Her gift reminds me of Juliet from Shatter Me, but she’s entirely her own character.
Akos—the farmer boy who became so much more than the “boy next door” trope. His quiet persistence, his sacrifice, the way he loved her... chef’s kiss

Favorite Quotes:
“I didn’t choose the blood that runs in my veins.”
“Try again.” He just quietly said it every time. It made me want to punch him.
“I like the way the words feel. It reminds me of you.”
Final Verdict:

Final Verdict:
I loved the love between these two. The sacrifice. The way Roth told their story. I was lying in bed with the audiobook version too, completely cozy and completely lost in their world, and again, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

If You Love:
Shatter Me Series (superpowers and prisoner dynamics), Caraval Series (sibling bonds), and The Apothecary Diaries (medicinal herbs and politics)... you’ll love this!
